What AOG means, and how to prepare before it happens

How to write a parts request suppliers can quote fast, and what to have ready.

AeroSterling InsightsUpdated October 2026

AOG stands for "aircraft on ground": an aircraft that can't fly until a technical problem is fixed, often because a part is needed. It is an industry term for urgency, not a regulatory status. Preparation makes the biggest difference to how fast you get a part.

What a supplier needs to quote fast

  • Exact part number, including the dash number, plus any approved alternates or interchangeable part numbers
  • Quantity
  • Aircraft type, engine and serial number, so effectivity can be checked
  • Acceptable condition: new (NE), new surplus (NS), overhauled (OH), serviceable (SV) or as removed (AR)
  • Release documents required, such as FAA Form 8130-3, EASA Form 1 or TCCA Form One, and any traceability requirements
  • Purchase type: outright (you buy and keep the unit), exchange (you receive a unit and return your core) or loan
  • Ship-to location and deadline, plus customs details for cross-border shipments

Condition codes in plain language

  • Overhauled (OH): disassembled, inspected, repaired as needed, reassembled and tested to approved data.
  • Serviceable (SV): inspected or tested and released as airworthy. The work scope can vary, so read the paperwork.
  • As removed (AR): taken off an aircraft and not tested or certified. It usually needs work before installation.

Prepare before it happens

  • Keep current access to the illustrated parts catalogue for your types.
  • Agree who can approve AOG spending, and up to what amount, outside office hours.
  • Keep a written list of the release documents and traceability your maintenance organisation accepts.
  • Have a customs broker and an AOG courier option ready for cross-border shipments.
  • Record core-return terms when you buy on exchange, to avoid surprise charges.

Airworthiness stays with you. Whoever supplies a part, the installer and operator are responsible for confirming airworthiness, traceability and regulatory compliance before installation.
